Who participates?
The program is available to all incoming WVU freshmen. There is generally an equal number of males and females.
What is the cost?
The cost of the trips varies depending on which trip you choose. Paddle and Backpack WV cost less because they are shorter trips and cost less to operate. Trip costs are listed on the Programs page.
How do I pay for the program?
Once you have registered for a program and completed and mailed back a program agreement, the charge will be applied to your WVU student account. A bill will then be generated and mailed to you within 30 days of processing the program agreement. This bill must be paid by the due date listed on the invoice and prior to participation in the Adventure WV program.
How many people will be in my group?
Group size varies depending on the trip and program you choose. Explore and Habitat WV groups include 18-22 fellow freshmen and 4-6 instructors and volunteers. Backpack WV groups include 8-10 fellow freshmen and 2-3 instructors and volunteers. Paddle WV groups include 12-15 fellow freshmen and 3-4 instructors and volunteers.
What if I have never been camping before or don't have a lot of outdoor experience?
All programs are designed with the beginner in mind yet provide challenges for the more experienced participant. Instruction will be provided with each activity. This is a learning experience for everyone, whether you've been camping before or not!
When do I have to be in Morgantown for the trip?
For Explore, Paddle, and Backpack WV trips you will need to be in Morgantown at the Student Recreation Center by 6pm on the first day of your trip. For Habitat WV programs you will need to be at the Student Recreation Center no later than 9am the first day of your trip. Click here for lodging options in Morgantown.
What kind of shape do I need to be in?
It is recommended that you be in decent shape. Some programs are more physically demanding than others and if you have questions about your ability to meet the physical demands of the trip you should contact us before signing up. Most healthy, active high school seniors should have no problem completing the program successfully.
Do I need any special equipment?
Most major equipment such as backpacks, tents, sleeping pads and bags, life preservers, etc. are provided by Adventure WV. You will be responsible for bringing personal items and clothing such as raincoat and proper footwear (wool or synthetic socks are highly recommended!!), most items are things you probably already have in your house! You can view an equipment list for each specific program on the Programs page.
What if I want to withdraw from the program?
You must contact the Adventure WV office to withdraw. Cancellation of your reservation will result in loss of the $95 deposit. If you cancel more than 30 days prior to the start of your trip the remainder of your payment will be refunded, if less than 30 days no refund will be provided.
What kind of clothing do I need to bring?
We will provide an equipment list of all necessary clothing and other items you will need to bring. On the Explore, Backpack, and Paddle WV programs we recommend avoiding cotton clothes! Cotton not only absorbs water but also takes a very long time to dry. Clothes made of nylon, polypropylene, and polyester materials work great. Jogging or workout clothes and anything similar to the Under Armour brand are excellent options. Avoid cotton socks!! Cotton socks will absorb water or sweat and cause blisters, a major discomfort during trips!! Wool or synthetic blends are excellent choices and can be found at most sports and department stores.
Should I eat something before arriving for my trip?
Yes. Explore, Paddle, and Backpack WV participants should eat before the 6pm start and participants in Habiatat WV programs should eat before the 9am start. All other meals will be provided.
Do I need to bring money on my trip?
Regardless of what trip you are on all meals will be provided, but on some trips we will be stopping at different places that may have food or other merchandise for sale (i.e. souvenirs, t-shirts, gifts for your family!). It is recommended to bring at least $10 but no more than $50 should be needed. For trips that involve a whitewater rafting experience, it is customary to tip your raft guide (generally $5 per person.)
