WVU Winter Break
December 27-January 11, 2008-09

Earn 6 credits discovering Patagonia
There's lots of talk these days about sustainable development – about "eco" and "social" responsibility – about saving the incredibly special places that are disappearing daily in our world. In this course we're going to move beyond all the talking about a more sustainable world and start actually building it. During the fall 2008 semester you will be learning about the Aysén region of southern Chile; an area known around the world as " Patagonia". Conservation International has deemed this area a "biodiversity hotspot", one of the richest and most threatened reservoirs of plant and animal life on earth. You'll learn about the area, its culture, its landscapes, and its challenges. And then you'll head out to see it for yourself.
During your winter break learning adventure, you will work and play alongside a group of locals who are associated with a non-profit initiative called "The Guide's School of Patagonia". Together, you will plan and carry out a back-country expedition through the Cerro Castillo National Reserve. You will learn proven methods for expedition planning and management which will assist with protection of endangered plants and animals and take some of the pressure off the reserve.
