LEAD Program

Test

Purpose

The Adventure Leadership Exploration and Development (LEAD) Program is a component of Adventure WV that strives to engage students in leadership development, technical skill development, and instructional skill acquisition through experiential training and mentorship. Adventure LEAD serves to not only promote student development but to facilitate the training and development of student leaders for recreational trips offered through the Outdoor Recreation Center. Students engaging with Adventure LEAD are encouraged to harness their own capacity to learn and lead in challenging and dynamic environments while partaking in meaningful experience with their WVU peers.

Leadership Progression and Structure

Process

The Adventure LEAD Program offers a progressive development system. Each level builds off concepts discussed and practiced in previous trainings. Each level of the system corresponds with differing levels of trip leading capabilities. The acquisition of more advanced leadership capabilities leads to opportunities for more advanced trip leading roles, culminating in the ability to propose and lead trips under professional staff guidance.

Technical Skill Progression and Structure

Second process

Leading technical adventures such as water-based activities, mountain biking, and rock climbing requires the development of specialized skills and competencies. In addition to fundamental outdoor leadership competencies, the Adventure LEAD Program offers students the opportunity to build technical skills as well as instructional skills in a variety of disciplines. These courses are intended to operate as either learning opportunities for basic skill acquisition, or in combination with leader courses to offer interested students the opportunity to lead and teach technical skill courses.
