Job Description

The Adventure WV Climbing Wall & Trips Graduate Assistant assists with the management of the Adventure WV Guided Trips, Climbing, and Custom Programs.

Guided Trips & Custom Programs: The GA will support the program planning and implementation of all Guided Trips for AWV. This may include course directing, staff training, trip leading, and overall operations. The GA will support Custom Programs as needed.

Climbing Program: The GA responsibilities may support facility oversight, programming, staff training, risk management, inventory control, inspections, database management, route setting, and class instruction. The GA may also serve as an outdoor site manager.

The GA may be asked to fulfill responsibilities associated with the Adventure WV program as needed, such as administrative support, First-Year Trip support, and expedition program leadership. 

Finally, the GA is part of the Adventure WV management team and is expected to attend and engage in periodic staff meetings and priority initiatives, as their academic schedule allows.

Starting Date

Highly preferred start date of May or June of the following season (pending academic status, the GA may spend the summer season working hourly and then transition to GA position with the start of the Fall semester).

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Accepted and enrolled in a WVU graduate program (candidates may apply for the GA position pending acceptance at WVU)
  • Experience in outdoor and experiential education
  • Experience in climbing wall management, climbing programming, risk management, trip management, and staff supervision, preferably in a collegiate outdoor recreation/education environment
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Current CPR and a Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder Certification- AWV may have the ability for GA candidates to obtain these certifications in-house upon acceptance, but preference will be given to candidates who already possess these certifications

Benefits

A 12-month graduate assistantship at WVU includes a stipend totaling $19,000 per year. In addition to the stipend, a full tuition waiver and health insurance are included. Additional student fees required by the university are not covered under the tuition waiver- this varies by department on campus.
