Winter Equipment Rental FAQ

Winter Rental FAQ

Winter Rentals will be concluding after Spring Break, with all gear to be returned to the ORC on or by March 20, 2023.

Who is eligible to rent recreational snow sport equipment?

Current WVU students, faculty, staff, other affiliated employees and SRC members are eligible to rent equipment.

Can I sponsor someone who is not a student? How do I sponsor?

Current WVU students, faculty, staff, other affiliated employees and SRC members may sponsor up to one (1) individual under the WVU affiliates profile. The ability to sponsor is initiated when the current WVU students, faculty, staff, other affiliated employees and SRC members are also renting for themselves. Renters may also include rent for dependents & non-WVU affiliated companions. Note that the WVU student, faculty, staff, affiliated employee or SRC member must be present when picking-up the equipment. The Renter is responsible for any loss, theft or damages stated on the equipment rental form.

What equipment is available for rent?

The ORC currently offers cross-country skis, downhill skis and snowboards for rent including appropriate boots, poles and helmets. Equipment is available for people in the weight range of “80lbs-250lbs”. Currently no children’s equipment is available for rent.

Can I reserve equipment?

Current WVU students, faculty, staff, other affiliated employees and SRC members may reserve recreational snow sport equipment within the calendar week that they intend to take the equipment out. To reserve gear, renters must come in person, pay the rental fee (ski gear at the time of reservation, all other gear at the time of pick-up), and sign a rental contract at the time of reservation. No phone reservations will be accepted. Reservations must be cancelled more than 24 hours in advance to receive a full refund. No refunds will be given to cancellations made within 24 hours.

How long can I rent for?

Current WVU students, faculty, staff, other affiliated employees and SRC members may rent winter equipment out for a total of one (1) week or seven (7) consecutive calendar days total. For extended breaks and holidays (i.e., winter break, MLK weekend and spring break), the ORC will offer alternative pricing to accommodate the change in hours.

What if I need to cancel?

Current WVU students, faculty, staff, other affiliated employees and SRC members must cancel reservations more than 24 hours in advance to receive a full refund. No refunds will be given to cancellations made within 24 hours. We can cancel over the phone, but the refund must be done in person.

What if I return the equipment late?

If the equipment is returned after the agreed upon due date, the renter will be charged the daily rental fee for every day late. Equipment not returned by the end of the semester it was rented in may be considered lost or stolen and will be charged the replacement fee. List of replacement fees available upon request.

What happens if I break or damage a piece of equipment?

If the equipment is returned damaged, a repair fee will be charged stated on the equipment rental contract. If it is lost or destroyed, a replacement fee will be charged. Equipment not returned by the close of winter season will be considered lost and renter charged applicable fees. A list of applicable fees is attached with every equipment rental contract. Examples of damages are provided during the equipment rental contract orientation.

Can I rent just the skis/snowboard?

Current WVU students, faculty, staff, other affiliated employees and SRC members are not allowed to rent out either skis or snowboards by themselves. Currently we are only offering a ski or snowboard package that includes skis/snowboards, boots, bindings, poles and helmet.

Can I rent just the boots?

Snowboard boots are available to rent on their own. At this time, ski boots may only be rented as part of the ski package.  ORC staff will not be allowed to receive personal skis/snowboards to install boots, nor be allowed to adjust any bindings that are not ORC rental equipment.

What if I have my own equipment? Can you adjust my bindings?

ORC staff are only trained on specific Marker and Burton bindings. To protect the staff, we are unable to work on any other bindings that are not our own rental equipment.

What information do I need to rent equipment?

Current WVU students, faculty, staff, other affiliated employees and SRC members need to know their height, weight, age and shoe size upon renting winter equipment from the ORC. Please bring your Student ID and a pair of socks.
