Job Description:

Adventure WV’s Program Support Staff and Rental Operations (PSSRO) facilitate most if not all the department’s logistical and rental needs. The PSSRO Graduate Assistant (GA) assists in the management of various Adventure WV Program Support Staff initiatives; both throughout the academic year and during the summer trips season through training, staff management, equipment management, food and menu planning, vehicle fleet coordination, and rental operations. Customer service is a large component of the PSSRO GA position as PSSRO actively works to support both internal customers (logistical operations: full time staff, department GAs, and student staff) in addition to external customers (rental operations: students, faculty, and staff at West Virginia University).

The Graduate Assistant will assist the Program Support Specialist with the management of Adventure WV’s Program Support and Rental Operations and Trips Program initiatives. Program Support responsibilities include inventory and management of programming equipment, helping to evaluate and operate Adventure WV’s programming food needs, and assisting in the coordination of Adventure WV’s vehicle and trailer fleet.  Rental Operations responsibilities of the GA include training and supervising program support staff, managing the rental systems and software, assisting with inventory and maintenance of rental equipment, and customer service. Trips Program responsibilities include planning, organizing and leading outdoor trips during extended student breaks.  Activity areas may include backpacking, canoeing, whitewater boating, bicycling, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, camping, hiking and service.  The GA may be asked to fulfill responsibilities associated with the Adventure WV program as needed, such as administrative support, class instruction, and expedition program leadership.  Finally, the GA is part of the Adventure WV management team and is expected to attend and engage in periodic staff meetings and retreats, as his/her academic schedule allows.

Starting Date:

Highly preferred start date of May or June of the following season (pending academic status, the GA may spend the summer season working officially as a temp employee, and then transition to GA position with the start of the Fall semester).

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Accepted and enrolled in a WVU graduate program (candidates may apply for the GA position pending acceptance at WVU)

  • Experience in outdoor and/or experiential education

  • Experience in staff management

  • Experience in outdoor trip leadership, group facilitation, risk management, and staff supervision

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Preferred: Experience in rental operations with emphasis in kayak, bicycle, or backpacking related sales or rentals

  • Preferred: Experience in logistical systems management (food, equipment, vehicle)

  • Current CPR and a Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder Certification- AWV may have the ability for GA candidates to obtain these certifications in-house upon acceptance, but preference will be given to candidates who already possess these certifications


A 12-month graduate assistantship at WVU includes a stipend totaling $18,000 per year. In addition to the stipend, a full tuition waiver and health insurance are included. Additional student fees required by the university are not covered under the tuition waiver- this varies by department on campus. If not taking classes during the summer season, the FYT GA may have the opportunity to work hourly full-time instead.
